Lumenis Ultrapulse Fractional CO2 Laser

The most powerful CO2 laser in aesthetic medicine ,can penetrate deeper than any aesthetic ablative CO2 laser. Combined with great versatility, this makes UltraPulse perfect for both everyday procedures and the thick and complex lesions.

A “fractional” laser is one where the laser light beam is broken up into a grid of thousands of microscopic beams. Think of piercing tiny holes in a black paper and covering a light with it and you will get the picture.

Unlike old resurfacing lasers that remove the entire top layer of skin, fractional resurfacing works by creating a grid of pinpoint laser beams, producing thousands of tiny but deep columns of treatment in your skin, known as micro thermal treatment zones. This method protects the skin from too much damage at once and healing is fast.

Usual trade-off is that the deeper you go with a resurfacing procedure, the better the results, but with added downtime and risk. So a light acid peel or a microdermabrasion has almost no risk of adverse effects and no downtime, but the results are modest. On the other hand, a deep traditional CO2 laser resurfacing can give good results, but it requires general anesthesia and more than two weeks of recovery, and the risk of side effects is too high. The Lumenis Ultra pulse fractional CO2 laser can penetrate deep for dramatic results and still have excellent safety profile and minimum downtime.

The Concept

Ultrapulse Lumenis Fractional CO2 Laser delivers thousands of tiny laser pulses in a pattern over the skin. Each pulse heats a column of tissue eliminating pigment discolorations at the surface and creating a zone of heating deep in the tissue. Unique to the Ultra Pulse, these zones of heating shrink collagen and tighten the skin immediately. The CO2 laser also offers the benefits of heating deeper layers of skin tissue, thereby stimulating collagen remodeling, tightening the skin further. Patients can select from a range of treatments depending on the needs of their skin and lifestyle.

Ultrapulse Lumenis Fractional CO2 Laser is designed to offer the versatility of both deep and superficial skin resurfacing with minimum downtime. The wavelength of light emitted by a CO2 laser is very well absorbed by water in the skin. It vaporizes lines, wrinkles, scars, dark spots and other irregularities, layer by layer. This process also stimulates the formation of new collagen to provide better elasticity and support for the skin.. Since only a fractional area of the skin is vaporized with “bridges” of untouched skin in between, healing time will be very less.

The Ultrapulse laser offers three variations of fractional resurfacing treatment namely Active FX, Deep FX and Total FX.

Active FX uses a larger pattern of 1.3mm spots of CO2 energy scattered over the skin, and how much coverage you get depends on the power density of the laser beam, which may be as high as 95% or more.

Deep FX produces a smaller pattern of 120 micron spots of variable density [5-25%]. The laser beams go fairly deep into skin and may even reach all the way to the subcutaneous tissue depending on energy given.

When Deep FX and Active FX treatments are combined to provide maximum skin rejuvenation benefits, the resulting treatment is called Total FX.

Because of the differences in how the laser delivers energy, each procedure is used to treat different skin conditions. Ultrapulse Lumenis fractional CO2 laser is a versatile skin resurfacing laser that has 34 FDA-approved indications for aesthetics, as well as a surgical cutting instrument used for laser surgery procedures.

Downtime?

Deep FX typically requires three days of downtime.

Active FX performed at higher energies requires four to six days of downtime.

With Total FX, downtime lasts anywhere from five to 10 days.

Various uses of Lumenis Ultra pulse fractional CO2 laser include

    • Acne scar

    • Open pore reduction.
    • Uneven pigmentation
    • Loss of skin’s elasticity due to aging
    • Poor skin texture

How deep will it penetrate your skin?

Ultrapulse laser offers different penetration depths to customize a treatment to you. Doctor will analyze your skin and adjust the density and depth of laser beam.

How many treatments will it take?

Most patients require 2-4 treatment to achieve the desired results. Since the treated area continues to improve for the 6 months following the laser treatment, we re-evaluate the need for any additional treatments at that time.

What type of anesthesia is used during the procedure?

The whole procedure is done under local or topical anesthesia. You are awake and comfortable the entire time. Prior to the procedure, topical numbing cream is applied for 60-90 minutes. In addition, some medicine is given prior to the procedure to help you relax. Using these measures, there is usually minimal discomfort during the laser procedure.
